Sharing thanks after a special day
When you run a family-owned and family-operated business, it can be hard to “turn off” work. Business talk has a way of sneaking into every dinner, holiday, or birthday party. For the non-family employees, that means they often get a real peek behind the curtain of what “family life” looks like for the owners. That’s just part of the reality of working in — or with — a family business. And yes, sometimes it leads to a few awkward moments.
But other times? It leads to something truly special.
On June 21, 2025, we experienced one of those moments. My son, Matthew Koontz — third-generation owner of Dale Koontz – Builder — married Brenna Ankrum in Morgantown, WV. It was a beautiful day at a stunning venue, made even more meaningful by the people who surrounded the couple: family, friends, and team members from Koontz Builder.
As the father of the groom, I was especially moved by the employees who drove over 10 hours to be there. Their presence was a gift to our family — one that meant more than I can fully express.
We’ve always strived to be a fair, respectful, and supportive employer. Our hope has been to build long-term relationships with our team, grounded in trust and mutual care. Seeing our people show up not just as co-workers, but as friends — as extended family — reminds me that the labels don’t matter as much as the love behind them.
Whether you call them family, friends, or colleagues, I hope you’re lucky enough to have people in your life who show up for you — just as ours did for us.
Warmly,
Scott Koontz
