Defining Professionalism

What does Professionalism mean to Dale Koontz - Builder?

If you've been around a Dale Koontz - Builder job site, you may have seen any number of our team wearing t-shirts or sweatshirts with the company logo.  In addition to that logo, the shirts include our 3 Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism and Quality Craftsmanship.  It's easy to slap some good sounding words on an article of clothing; the real question is "What does it actually mean to anyone?"

Last month we shared our thoughts on Integrity.  This month I'd like to comment on what Professionalism means to Dale Koontz - Builder.

"Professionalism" means that "We run this company like a business".  At first glance, that may seem like a silly statement.  Of course it's a business.  We have a tax ID number, a logo and a website.  But to be a true Professional means more than that.  To us it means that we document, we plan, we use professional methods and best practices in our industry.  We attend conferences and shows to become more and more educated about our craft.

We contribute to the community and its causes, because that's what good businesses do.  We offer competitive pay and benefits to our workers, because they are PROFESSIONALS.  This is not a hobby or a "side job" for our carpenters, laborers, painters and office staff; but it's an important career for them as they support themselves and their families.

The construction business has relatively low barriers to entry.  Anyone with a truck and some tools can say that they are a contractor.  Sadly, it means that any number of folks can call themselves "Professional Contractors", and they tend to leave their customers with a less than satisfying experience.  Our bar for being a Professional is much higher.

If you've had an experience with a less-than-professional operation and found it disappointing, we would love the chance to tackle your next project.  Let us show you what a true Professional looks like.
